Tomorrow is not promised

{I shared this with the ladies in my private fb group yesterday and wanted to share this my readers and TrueheartSpeaks Community}

Tomorrow is not promised

Tomorrow is not promised and many of you are waiting on ‘tomorrow.’ I don’t know what your assignment is nor do I know who God has assigned to you but what I do know is that a friend died at 39 yesterday (April 29, 2016). Yes 39! I trust God’s timing and I pray my friend, William, knew the lord but what I love is the impact he made on those around him. I’m enjoying reading all of the posts on Facebook from those he knew.

Many of you have let the enemy lock you in a corner and make you think that your life, experiences, your flaws, your failures, your successes (because of course they can’t be that big or that fabulous compared to {insert person or trait you compare yourself to}) don’t mean a thing in this big ole world. Well honey let me tell you that YOU MATTER.

Let me tell you that if you are awake today, you have purpose and there is a reason you are still here. I don’t know why God called him home at 39 but I’m thankful to be here at 39. I don’t know what my tomorrow holds but I know I’m going to kick every door in and knock every wall down that the enemy would build to try to keep me from and sabotage what God has for me.

Some of you are saying “I’m too young” and others are saying “I’m too old.” Well many are saying William was too young to die and my question is…

Are you too young or too old to live?

I would say NO.

I would say that today is the perfect day for you to start being intentional with the life God has given you. Today is the last day of our monthly discussion on the topic of fear {every month we talk about new topic in the #iSpeakLife Society} but it won’t be the last time we will talk about it. Fear has paralyzed many of us into inaction. We talk a good game but do nothing!

I know you loved prince’s music and you thought he was the best thing since sliced bread but my question is what will folks have to say about you.

  • Can you say you’re giving it your all?
  • Can you say you’re putting 120% in?
  • Can you say that your living instead of existing?

No more excuses.

No more reasons why you can’t.

Stop complaining and do something.

God has given us EVERYTHING we need to get started today or to keep going if we’ve already taken the plunge.

Either way… As big as they may seem, nothing and no problem, challenge, or struggle is bigger than not waking up tomorrow to do what you keep saying you’re going to do today.

Let’s go!

Let get it!

Let’s turn this world (whichever part God has assigned you to) upside down.

Let’s move in spite of our fears!

Let’s make some things happen.

Let’s leave a legacy our family and friends and most important God would be proud of.

Tomorrow is NOT promised and
many of you are waiting on ‘tomorrow.’
DO IT TODAY!

Click to Tweet this

Your assignment:

Think about those things you’ve wanted to do but kept putting off. Create some time to DO THEM! You know those family and friends you’ve been saying you’re going to call or visit, create time to CALL or VISIT THEM!  You know that ‘thing’ you’ve saying you wanted to do or start, DO IT! Start making time for the things that matter most to you and then start doing it. Stop waiting until ‘tomorrow.’ Now here is the kicker… don’t just make plans, I want you to follow through on them.

Until Next Time…

How to hear from God more clearly during your quiet time.

Hear from God during Quiet Time

In preparation for 2016, I shared a survey asking a series of questions. One of which was “Which of the following areas do you struggle with the most?” There were about 5-7 topics that rose to the top of the list. I then asked my blog readers, my vip email list & the women in my private fb page which of those topics you’d like me start with and can you guess which one had the highest number?

Yep you guessed it, it was quiet time with God to clearly hear from Him. Now if you are reading this and thinking, that wasn’t on my list, no worries, I’ll be addressing all of the top topics you selected at some point throughout this year.

I got you! 😉

Ok so with that said, I wanted to share what works for me when I need to hear from God more clearly during my quiet time. Now let me say that it’s been almost 20 years since I committed my life to Christ, so don’t be so hard on yourself. This is a skill that takes time, patience, diligence and consistency.

You may not automatically recognize the voice of God because you aren’t sure if it’s him or you. I get it. I’ve been there and to be honest if I’m not careful to set time aside to commune and spend time with God, even some 19 years later, I question if what I heard was Him.  If I happen to busy myself with the world’s cares and my own cares without giving them to him and letting him guide me through them, I get caught up in the busyness and chaotic noise of the world around me.

Can you relate?

  • You want to spend time with God but you don’t know where to start.
  • You want to hear from him more clearly but aren’t sure if what you hear is him.
  • Your life is so crazy that trying to find quiet time is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
  • You hear people say they hear from God but you have no clue what that’s like.
If any of these hit home, well let me tell you this… YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Spending time with God is just like spending time
with any other person you want to get close to.
#QuietTimeChallenge

Can you remember a time when you were dating someone and you wanted to be with them all the time? Even with a busy schedule, you made time for them.

Why?

Well because you wanted to see your boo. I don’t care how long of a day you had, you weren’t going to let that day go by without talking to or seeing him/her.

Take a second and really think about it.

This is what God wants from us. He wants to spend time with us. He wants to talk to us. He wants to love on is. He wants to be the first and last thing on our minds and in our hearts.

Now I know what you’re saying, “yeah Detra that’s sounds good and all and yes that’s what I want, but how do I get to that point.”

I get it and I’m going to help you out.

Below are some of the things I do to hear from God more clearly during my quiet time.

Yes I use them!

Check them out and figure out what you can immediately implement.

  • Schedule it in. Put it in your calendar.
  • Start small. Set aside at least 10-15 minutes. If you’ve never done this, don’t schedule 30 minutes to an hour. You will overwhelm yourself.
  • Eliminate all distractions.
  • Set the tone with worship music.
  • Be Open.
  • Read God’s word and let it speak to you.
  • Get Quiet.
  • Reflect on what you read and how it will affect you today.
  • Get a journal/notebook to write down what you hear.
  • Be consistent. It will feel uncomfortable at first, but keep at it.

Now keep in mind there are other things you can do to hear from God more clearly but here are just a few to help you get started. Also remember that prayer and quiet time are different. You’re idea of prayer may be giving God your laundry list of to dos, saying amen, then getting up and going about your day without letting Him respond.

Stop it!

That’s not prayer, that’s a monologue. This is why you may not be able to hear clearly from him. You haven’t sat still long enough to allow him to respond. Once you pray, sit tight, get quiet and let God speak.

Give God the same kind of love and attention you want from Him.

#QuietTimeChallenge

Listen, there are days that I don’t say a word other than “God I want to hear from you. Speak to me today. I need you.”

Especially if what I’m going through has me on my last leg and there really isn’t anything else for me to say.

If you’ve been there you know what I mean.

Hopefully this post and the strategies I shared will help you on your journey to hearing from God more clearly.

Want to have these suggestions at your disposal to print and hang up to refer to?

Awesome!

I figured you would, so I created a Quiet Time Checklist for you to refer to when having your quiet time with God.

quiet time email header

Next time you prepare to get quiet and have some alone time with God, use my FREE QUIET TIME CHECKLIST to help position you to hear everything God wants to say to you.

Until Next Time…

Hug + Love + Prayers

Are you willing to work for it?

Are you willing to work for it-

I know that marriage is majorly under attack. I wonder if we put as much time into doing WHATEVER it took to make it work, and focusing more on how WE can make it better as opposed to what THEY aren’t dong or what THEY can do, would marriages be in a different place? I wonder if Divorce was removed from being an option, would people work a little harder to make it work.

Now don’t get me wrong, some folks know good and well they had no business getting married. I know that times get hard, money gets funny, folks change, but at the end of the day are we really committed to the vows and covenant we took.

I think people need grace, forgiveness and love, but I also think people think transparency, safety, honest, commitment, fidelity, intimacy and communication. We need prayer…. LOTS of prayer. Not sure if you’ve tried it, but it works. Sometimes you have to stop telling everyone what’s not going right and talk to God about what you desire to be right in your marriage.

As honey and I prepare to celebrate 10 years in august 2016 (God-willing) I want to be who he needs me to be, which isn’t always who I want to be (jussayin). I want to be who God created me to be for him. I want us to be on the same page, I want God to speak to us through each other. I want to be better not only for him, but for me. I want God to be pleased with our marriage, so that our son can see what a healthy relationship, friendship and marriage looks like.

I know that I am not the easiest person to be married to but he does an awesome job of dealing me and everything that comes with it. Keep in mind it’s not always good but we made a commitment years ago that the D word would NOT be an option when things got, hard, crazy and downright out of control. Thankfully up until this point, God has allowed us to keep our word to each other. When all else fails, God never fails and I can say that HE has kept us when weren’t sure if we could keep each other.

I say all this to say that marriage takes work but it’s worth it. Are you willing to work at it like your life depended on it? Are you willing to say NO to some things so you can say YES to your marriage and the person you married?

Jussayin… Errbody wants to be married but no one wants to put in the work to stay married. Sometimes in addition to the question ‘why did I get married?’ you may need to also ask, ‘why should I stay married?’

I don’t know…. just thinking out loud.

Praying for marriages across our country, husbands and wives need to be covered daily. The enemy is out to steal, kill and destroy what God created between husband and wife.

How to navigate through the ups and downs of mommyhood

ups and downs of mommyhood

Ok so my son will be four in September and I’ve got to say that life is definitely a roller coaster with him around. Never a dull moment. Well in addition to being a mom, I’m a wife, a daughter, tee tee to my twin nieces, entrepreneur, adjunct instructor… And just so you know there are a few other roles that I probably my missed. Well if you’re a mom like me, life isn’t always cherries and it doesn’t always go as planned.

So to help you keep from getting your panties all in a bunch, here are a few tips to help you navigate this journey of being a mom. Now whether you’re just starting out like me or have been in the game for a while, tips to help make this job of being a mom a bit easier are always helpful.

Now keep in mind, I’m most certainly no expert but what I’ve found is if I’m going through it, so is someone else. Plus sharing is caring…

Just so you know as I am working on this he is upstairs watching spiderman next to his dad while his dad is sleeping (he super duper loves his daddy).

So here goes…

  1. Pray: Nothing like taking every need to our God in prayer. Nothing like surrendering what we can’t do to the One who can do all things.  Never stop praying and never stop taking time (even if but for 5 minutes) to get quiet and let the Lord speak to and guide you.
  2. Take some deep breaths: This may sound simple, but it works (and not just for giving birth – lol).  I learned the power of deep breathing while is school getting my first masters degree.  It relaxes you.  It eases the dis-ease or uneasiness you are feeling.  It also brings you back to your center and your core.  Sometimes in the midst of my three-nager (yes a new term I learned) spazzing out on me, yes he has melt downs and just so I don’t melt down with him, deep breathing (and hugs from my honey) help get me through those moments.
  3. Let yourself off the hook: Listen, take the S off your chest and the bracelets off of your wrist (Wonder Woman) and be okay the perfection of your imperfections. I imagine that everyday won’t be perfect. I imagine that your children will make choices that you as a parent aren’t proud of, but let yourself off the hook. You are doing the best you can and even if you aren’t, the first step is acknowledging it so you can do something about it.
  4. Ask for help: This is huge.  As mothers/parents, we sometimes feel weak and vulnerable when we have to ask for help because we feel like we should have it all together.  God never asked you to have it all together.  He just asks that you do your part.  Are you doing your part, so that God can do His part?  Understand that trying to do it by yourself is sometimes what causes the stress and anxiety that we encounter because we want others to think we have it together when we are struggling.  Seek God for provision and assistance.  Seek out help from those who have offered but you said no because your pride wouldn’t let you say yes.
  5. Talk to other moms: I found that when I talked to other moms, it wasn’t as bad as I thought and I realized I wasn’t the only one.  Find some mom friends who you can talk to about what you are going through and who can relate. Don’t isolate yourself thinking it’s just you going through whatever you are going through.  Open your mouth and connect with those who in the same boat as you.
  6. Do what works for you:  Realize that as a mom you have to do what works for you.  If you follow me on social media at all, you know I am big on doing what works for you. You can’t always follows the mommy/parent rules that other people have followed.  You have to do what works for you and your family.  You have to do what makes you and your family happy, regardless of what people have to say about it. They may not like it but you better believe, if you are stern, they will respect it.  Make your own rules, create your own lines and do what works for you and yours.
  7. Take a day off: If you work and work and work and work and work but you never rest, you become agitated, burned out, stressed, overly emotional and much, much more.  Learn to take a day off.  Even if you can’t take a day off from being a mom, see if you can take a day off from work.  Take a mental health day.  I am a firm believer in taking care of your mind and spirit in the same way your take care of your body (that is if you take care of your body). If God worked six days and rested on the 7th day, you should follow suit.
  8. Stop comparing: Don’t comparing your life to someone else’s. You don’t know what they had to go through to get what they’ve got. Nor do you know if what you see is actually truth and facts. We show people what we want them to see and what you are comparing yourself to may in fact be false. Stay in your own lane and run your own race.  Stop trying to compare and compete with people who aren’t even on your level or on different level because they’ve put in work that you choose not to put in (that’s another covno). Don’t compare your four children situation to someone who has two. Don’t compare your apples to someone else’s oranges.  It just cause more stress to an already stressful situation.

Your turn…

  • In order to generate and create the life of purpose you crave you have to start doing things differently and do what works for you. Take some time to figure out what really works for you and do it. Make adjustments as needed.
  • Don’t isolate yourself and don’t assume you’re the only one going through what your going through. Share your journey with other moms.
  • Use the tips above that I shared, especially 4 & 5.
I’m sure there are other mom’s who’d loved to hear from you. After reading this week’s Life Purpose Message, share your thoughts with me in the TrueheartSpeaks Facebook Community.

God has not forgotten about you

God has not

Not sure who this post is for but know that God has not forgotten about you.  I know you may be going through a rough patch in your life, your marriage, your job, your finances, your health or anything else.

Know this, God’s word is true when He says He will never leave you nor forsake you.  You might feel alone, but you are not alone.  You might feel isolated and that may have nothing to do with you and EVERYTHING to do with God.  Sometimes God has to strip us and separate us not to break us but to make us.  There is purpose even in the breaking.  When God is involved there is only one reason for the breaking and that is the making.

You have purpose.  You have value. You have a specific reason for being here.  Never doubt it and never let what you are going through or what you’ve been through to make you second guess that.

You are being pressed.  You are being crushed.  You are being stripped.  You are feeling like you don’t have anything else to give.  Just hold on.  God is not through with you just yet.  He is doing a work in you.  He is preparing you.

Don’t fight the feeling.  Don’t fight the test.  Don’t give in to the temptations and distractions of the enemy.  Pay attention to the tactics, schemes, and patterns of the enemy.  He is keen but he isn’t that smart.  You will come out of this.  You will overcome this.  For you are an overcomer.  I know you are feeling overwhelmed but God asks that we cast out cares on Him for He cares for us.  I dare you to cast all of your cares on Him and look to hills from which comes your help because your help come from the Lord.

I want you to speak God’s word over yourself, your life and your situation.   Speak life into yourself and that situation that you feel like is trying to over take you.  Take it over with the power of life in your words.

I believe in you and in the God that resides in you.  Trust Him bring you out of this season better, stronger and wiser.

Until next time…

Live.Love.Lead in & on purpose

Mind Over Matter Monday – Motivational Minute 434

It’s Mind Over Matter Monday!

Today’s Motivational Minute is… What YOU Feed Grows!

190347521720188350_gMRo7bBH_c

What you feed into your mind grows.  Are you feeding your faith or are you feeding your fears?  A mind filled with fear has NO ROOM for dreams.  The only way to stop worry, doubt, discouragement and fear, is to replace it with faith, the word of God, positive and sefl-affirming thoughts, and massive action.  Some times the best remedy for fear is to move in spite of fear.  The more action you take, the more your fear begins to dissipate.

YOUR TURN… on this Mind Over Matter Monday, tell me, how have you overcome your fears?  Do you have more fear than dreams in your mind.  If so, what’s one thing you can do today to begin to produce more dreams and faith and less fear?

Here’s to you living life IN & ON Purpose…

Fearless Friday – Motivational Minute 433

It’s Fearless Friday!

Today’s Motivational Minute is… Just Jump!

faith-is-taking-the-first-step-even-when-you-dont-see-the-whole-staircase-mlk1

Sometimes you have to just stop thinking and talking about it and just take that leap of faith. The problem with you is that you have been suffering form analysis paralysis and people pleasing. Stop thinking about it and stop basing what you do off of the approval of others. Just because they haven’t tried it doesn’t mean it can’t and won’t be done.

Stop contemplating and just jump. As Martin Luther Kings, Jr once said, “faith is taking the first step when there is not staircase.”

YOUR TURN… on this Fearless Friday, tell me, what area of your life do you need to be more tenacious, vivacious and adventurous? Why haven’t you taken the jump?

Here’s to you living life IN & ON Purpose…

Wise Wednesday – Motivational Minute 416

It’s Wise Wednesday!

Today’s Motivational Minute is…

TRUST THE PROCESS!

On this Wise Wednesday, I want you keep doing what you are doing.  Don’t get discouraged because you don’t know exactly how things are going to turn out.  Trust the process and trust that every step you take toward purpose is right where you are supposed to be.  Sometimes not having all of the answers isn’t fun but most times it is the best thing for you.  Believe you me… I know.  Sometimes we have to just trust that all things are working together for our good.

Martin Luther King Jr, says “Faith is taking a step even when you can’t see the staircase.”

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, you’ve got what it takes but it will indeed take all you’ve got.  But in giving it all you’ve got, sometimes you’ve got just give it all you’ve got without knowing all of the answers.  Plus if you knew everything you’d have to go through to get to where God is taking you, you might not go.  🙂

YOUR TURN… on this Wise Wednesday, tell me how will you trust the process more on this journey you are taking?  Do you need to know all of the answers and all of the details before making a decision?

Share your thoughts in the comments section. I would love to hear from you and so would our followers. There may be someone who just might be blessed by what you share!

Here’s to you living life IN & ON Purpose…
