Can you believe it?

Christmas 2015 came and gone and 2016 is right around the corner. I pray your Christmas was filled with lots of love.  We had a pretty low key day with family.

Ok so , we are just four days from closing out 2015 and I know many of you have decided to wait until 2016 to kick off your new goals, dreams, aspirations and resolutions (do people still make resolutions?).  Well as I was thinking over the weekend about what I wanted to be different for me in 2016, I realized that while waiting until the new year makes sense, it doesn’t have to apply to me.

Let me fill you in…

Maybe you want to wait until the new year to get your life together. Maybe it’s going to church more often. Maybe it’s exercising more or drinking more water. Maybe it’s spending more time with family and loved ones. Maybe it’s doing a better job of saving money. Maybe it’s investing in your business.

Well whatever it is, you know that just because most people wait until the new year to start doesn’t mean you have to. You see, waiting until the new year, doesn’t really guarantee your success.  It just means you waited four days to start in the new year what you could have started today.  Now you might be wondering what I mean by that.

Well if you own a business or know anything about businesses.  Most businesses starting planning for the following year around September, October. Heck, many have completed their 2016 plan by September/October and by the time January 1 starts, their 2016 business plan is already done and they are ready to launch their plan.

So how does this apply to you?

Well I want you to take these next few days to get started. That’s right start today. Figure out what you want to be different in 2016 and start putting in the work to make it happen today. If you need to open the account for the new savings, then do it today.  If you want to start drinking more water, go buy the water today. If you want to go back to school, start filling out the application today.

You get the point!

You see, we like to use the excuse that since there are only a few more days left in the year, we will just wait until next year to get started when there are other underlying reasons why we haven’t started.  I won’t get into those right now, but what I will say is stop making excuses about why you can’t start today.  Get rid of what ‘society’ says you can do and when ‘they’ say you have to do it.  Create a ‘new normal’ in your life.  Create new standards and even new boundaries.

In preparation for 2016, I did my normal research of numbers and found that 16 represents LOVE.  Yes … LOVE.  I’ve been pondering and chewing on this for some time and there were many things that came to mind for me, which I will share with you.

This year will be a year of love in every area of your life.  Loving more of you.  Loving more of your family.  Loving more of God.  Loving more of your life.  You see we spend so much time loving others that we miss the chance to love on ourselves.  We also spend so much time admiring other people’s lives that we miss the chance to really fall in love with our own lives.  This year will be the year that, if you should desire it, you will experience a love like never before.  The reason I say should you desire it, is because this will be something that will only manifest in your desires and expectation.  You have to want it.  If you don’t want to experience the fullness of love in all areas of your life, you won’t.

As we transition from 2015 to 2016, my prayer for you is that you would start today.  You see, I was going to wait until the new year to do a detox and I said, “what the heck, why wait until Jan 1 when I can start today and I did.”  I went to the store, bought my detox tea and had my first cup this evening.

No more waiting and contemplating.

Have Your Moment

This weekend I had a moment where I had to have my own moment. Things just seemed to be overwhelming for me and while at church yesterday I just burst into tears while hugging a friend. I had been holding them back the entire morning and when she hugged me and asked if I was ok, I said no and let out a cry of relief. Even coaches, consultants, leaders, parents, experts get overwhelmed and sometimes bite off more than they can chew. But remember it’s not what happens to you but how you respond. For the last few days, I have been feeling the need to slow down and really re-connect with the Lord. Life has been on autopilot and speed dial and I think it just caught up with me. I encourage you to read this post I wrote just over a year ago and take some time to have your moment if need be. When you feel the tug and then things start feeling tight, shut down, shut off and recharge. Have your moment.

All in the same week, there have been deaths that have affected people close to me.  My mom lost two of her best friends in the same week one was out of the blue and the other we knew it was just a matter of time. Then one of my best friends lost her mother suddenly.  Last week I had a few students in my Success Life Skills class who were having really bad days and they just couldn’t seem to get themselves together.  They were in class but they weren’t.  The class discussion was about working, grinding and hustling.  Doing what you need to do to make things happen in your life and being consistent at it. I AM God’s Masterpiece


This week’s SpeakLife Declaration is:

For I am his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that I should walk in them. (‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ESV).

I was reading my bible last night before heading to bed and The Lord took me to Ephesians chapter 2. As I was reading the chapter, verse 10 popped out at me. It says that we are his workmanship… In other translations it says we are his masterpiece.

Now I don’t know about you but I don’t always feel like a masterpiece. I don’t always feel like the Mona Lisa. I don’t always feel like something special and unique. Something that some might call priceless.

But guess what?

Who cares what I feel, God word is clear that in spite of how I feel about myself, His word declares how HE feels about me. This passage declares the we were created for GOOD WORKS which God prepared beforehand (before we got here) and not only that, but that we should walk in those good works that were created before we got here.

So let me let you in on a little secret…. You have purpose, you have a reason for being here, you are special and unique and set apart. I know that your life and your circumstances may not agree but I serve a God that can take whatever you are going through and turn it around if you let him.

So not only for today but for the next 7 days meditate on this passage of scripture and become one with it. Meditate on it until you really start to believe it. I also want you to speak it. Say it everyday throughout the day. Constantly remind yourself that you in fact are indeed a masterpiece. You were created with something specific in mind that God purposed for you to do and to be before you got here.

Pursue Purpose


Just because people don’t get you doesn’t mean you stop pursuing purpose. It just means you have use more wisdom and discernment in how your pursue purpose. Adding purpose to your life isn’t easy especially if you e been ‘existing for some time. Sometimes it’s not meant for others to get you or it at this time. God wants to see how committed you are to the assignment as opposed to the accolades. Be committed to the assignment. Don’t be discouraged if no one pays you any attention in the beginning. Just know that you are being molded and shaped for an appointed season and time. Pursue purpose. As you pursue purpose and as you begin to operate in your assignment, God will begin to open doors for others to see what God has been doing in you all along.

Keep pursuing…

On September 1st, we celebrated my son’s first Birthday. I am still in sheer amazement that this year has flown by so quickly. Some days I feel like it was just yesterday that I was bringing him home from the hospital. During my pregnancy, lots of people would tell me to ‘take it all in because it goes by so fast.’ To be honest, I still have family, friends and even strangers share the same sentiments as Dallas grows and gets older each day. So as I sat and watched Dallas sleeping the night before his birthday, I thought to myself, am I really taking it all in and have I done a good job of enjoying ‘the moment‘ in spite of still rushing through many of my days.

Help… I’m Overwhelmed!!!

Are you feeling Overwhelmed?

Are you ready to just throw in the towel?

Is life becoming a bit much lately?


Over the last week or two, I’ve had conversations with a number of individuals who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and just downright stressed to the point of no return.

Can you relate?  

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed that you just wanted to throw in the towel on your dreams, your business, your job, your marriage and maybe even life? 

You just felt like it was TOO MUCH for you to deal with.

While one individual was feeling overwhelmed about her new responsibilities as an entrepreneur in addition to working on her PhD, another was feeling overwhelmed about her responsibilities as a new wife and mother and how to adjust and balance it with a demanding work schedule.  Then there was another who was overwhelmed with EVERYTHING, her business, her marriage, and her overall life.  I imagine that those of you reading this have felt overwhelmed at some point in your life.  Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed right this minute.

Well I’ve been there and those are the days (I must admit) that I just shut down.  When I felt myself getting to that point, I would just go to bed, lay on the couch or just watch shows of nothingness on TV.  Other times, I would recharge, re-assess, and rejuvenate myself to get back on track.  Over the years, as I learned to better cope with my stress and anxiety, I learned that sometimes I just had too much going on and at other times I wasn’t prioritizing well enough.

Can you relate?

What I am going to share with you are things that I shared with my clients listed above.  It is my hope that these strategies you can immediately put to use to deal with your overwhelm as well as to help keep you from getting overwhelmed.  I’ve also used most if not all of them at some point or another.

Keep in mind that this list isn’t exhaustive… feel free to add to it in the comments section.

  1. First you must know that this is not God’s intention for you or for your life.  You are not supposed to be overwhelmed.  His word says for those who are heavy laden, He will give you rest if you come unto Him (Matt 11:28).  His word also says, that he will be give you praise for a spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3).  It also says to cast your cares on Him for He cares for you (I Peter 5:7).
  2. Next take a deep breath.  Breathe through it.  Sometimes taking a few minutes to take some really deep breaths in and out help to ease your level of anxiety and give you a moment to get yourself together.
  3. Take a Mental Health day.  Take a break from everything and just tend to you and your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health.  Rest your mind, rest your body, and rest your spirit.  If you have sick days at work that you NEVER use…. it might be TIME you put them to use.
  4. Keep going and don’t freeze.  Don’t let your overwhelm keep you in a constant state of paralysis… where you think about your particular issue so much that you do nothing about it. (been there done that)
  5. Go back to what worked the last time.  If you’ve been here before, what worked that last time?  What strategies did you use and implement the last time it worked.  Do it again!  If it’s doing a brain dump and writing everything out in your journal, screaming and having a good cry, writing a letter, praying, taking a day off to get yourself together. Whatever it is, take some time to do what has worked for you in the past. Remember, if you were able to get through it before you can get through it again.
  6. Pray & Meditate. Although this should be first, this list is in no particular order.  When you feel yourself getting full of anxiety, fear, worry, and doubt… PRAY.  Philippians 4:67 says: Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. As I stated in #1, it is NOT God’s intention for you to be stressed and overwhelmed.
  7. After you’ve prayed and had your meditation.  Read God’s word and other positive self affirming sayings or readings that affirm the awesomeness that you are.
  8. Quiet all of the noise in your head.  Try to get to a quiet place to get clear from the clutter.
  9. Take a walk.  Sometimes a walk to clear your mind will give you answers to everything you need as it relates to your anxiety, stress and overwhelm.  It helps you to put things into perspective, clear your mind and it also removes you from the environment that may be causing you to be overwhelmed.
  10. Exercise. It is said that exercise can actually calm anxiety.  By exercising you are clearing your mind and body from toxins that may be cluttering them. It also gets your body and juices running.  By exercising, you may actually get clarity on what’s causing you to be overwhelmed.
  11. As suggested in #4 as something you may have already done, do a brain dump or journal.  A brain dump is when you just empty everything you have in your head out on paper.  There’s no rhyme, reason or rhythm to how it comes out.  You just write it as it you are thinking it.  As for journaling, it’s the same although most times your thoughts are little more concise and clear.
  12. Take some things off of your plate.  Are you doing too much?  Are you saying YES to everyone and everything?  STOP IT!  You can’t be all things to all people.  Start learning to say NO.
  13. Here are a few extra bonuses:  Have your moment, have a good ole cry, or have a really good laugh. One of the individuals I spoke to had intentionally called me to get her a good cry in but I ended up making her laugh so hard that she decided that a cry wasn’t what she needed but it was a good laugh.

In ALL things give THANKS…

Happy November!!


It’s that time of year when we are getting ready for the holidays, switching out our warm weather clothing for our cold & freezing (for some us) weather clothing.  We have fully transitioned from summer to fall and we are now getting ready for a time of giving thanks this month.  Although it should be celebrated on a daily basis, we tend to focus more on giving thanks and being appreciative during the month of November due to Thanksgiving.  Last Year I did something called 30 Days of Thanks where each day I posted something for us to be thankful for with a journal assignment and prayer at that end.

A few days ago, there happened to be someone who found my blog post on the 30 Days of Thanks and subscribed to receive my 30 Days of Thanks that I created last year.  How awesome is that!  Well in light of that, I decided to dedicate this month’s weekly posts to excerpts from the the 30 Days of Thanks.

Today’s post is from Day 5:

30 Days of Thanks…

Day Five:

Today’s day of thanks is focused on our Basic Necessities: FOOD, CLOTHING, SHELTER.We are five days into the 30 Days of Thanks and today we want to take this day to focus on food, clothing and shelter.  Oftentimes, we tend to focus only on what we don’t have but most times we are referring to not having enough to meet our ‘wants‘ not our ‘needs.‘  In preparing for today’s post and in light of Hurricane Sandy, I started thinking about the hundreds of thousands of people who lost EVERYTHING!  For them, their homes and everything in it was destroyed.  After Hurricane Sandy, the basics of food, clothing, and shelter, something we take for granted on a daily basis, vanished in a moment.
  • Can you imagine leaving your home to escape a storm and coming back to realize your home and everything in it is no longer there?
  • Can you imagine working one day, lose your job another day, lose your home the following month leaving you the only option but to move into a shelter just to have somewhere to lay your head?
  • Can you imagine making enough money to just barely pay the bills but not have enough for food? or vice versa?
  • Can you imagine going to the food pantry for food just to feed yourself and your family when there used to be a time you ate out every other weekend?
This is the reality of many people.  You see, the face of homelessness is no longer what we think.  It is YOU, it is I, it is who we least expect; people who work hard, love God and want the best for themselves and their families.  They may even have their own businesses, they may have gotten laid off or maybe there just isn’t enough money to cover the month.  Either way, as you will see below, the face of homeless has changed and if we aren’t careful, it could be any one of us.  (If you want you can say THANK YOU lord for food, clothing, and shelter RIGHT NOW, be my guest).Before we move into being thankful for our wants in another post (which for some people food, clothing, and shelter are wants), which goes beyond the basics, we want to focus on our needs.  So as you focus on giving thanks for having somewhere to lay your head, eating a nice hot meal, and having clean clothes to put on your body, think about these statistics (
  • National Homeless Estimates: 700,000 per night; 2 million/year. (On any given night in America / US, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless)
  • The homeless population is made up of: Single men 44 percent of the homeless,single women 13 percentfamilies with children 36 percent, andunaccompanied minors seven percent (7%).
  • The homeless population is about 50 percent African-American35 percent white12 percent Hispanic2 percent Native American and 1 percent Asian.
  • 28% of adults said they sometimes or often do not get enough to eat, compared with 12% of poor American adults.
  • 44 percent did paid work during the past month.
  • 66 percent of the homeless have problems with alcohol, drug abuse, or mental illness.
  • 30 percent have been homeless for more than two years.
  • 3.5 million people (1.35 million of which are children) will experience homelessness in a given year ** THIS Is HUGE!!!
  • Families with children comprise 33% of the homeless population.
  • 25%of the homeless nationwide are employed — WORKING BUT HOMELESS
  • 31 million Americans now live in hunger or on the edge of hunger.
  • Families are the largest and fastest growing segment of the homeless population.
After reading these stats, my heart was very heavy because I remember a time where that could have been me.  When I got laid off from my job back in 2009, I wasn’t sure where I’d be or if I’d be able to find a job immediately.  When a two-income home now becomes a one-income home, you wonder how you are going to make it through.  BUT GOD!  He helped us make it through.  Every bill was paid, and we were able to live comfortably, but tight, on my husband’s income and speaking engagements I was getting at the time.  I was attending graduate school to get my second masters, that I had imagined my prior employer would pay for. But when I got laid off, that was another bill I had to think about paying.  Again, BUT GOD.  I completed my second masters in Mental Health Counseling in May 2011 while pregnant with my first child.  In the midst of all of that, I began to appreciate the little things: having the lights and gas on.  $1 Movie nights from Redbox, just being able to spend quality time with my husband even though we may not have had enough money for a date outside the home.  I started thanking God for the basics and I also started getting creative on how we could still have a great time on a budget.There were a couple passages in the Bible that the Lord took me to as I was meditating on what to write for today’s post.  The first is in Deuteronomy 8:2-4.  At this point, the children of Israel had been reminded of how God provided manna for them while in the wilderness and how during those 40 years of wandering (that’s another post), the clothes they wore NEVER wore out nor did their feet swell.  The passage states that God led them in the wilderness to humble them and test them in order to know what was in their heart.Let me stop here for a minute.There may be someone who has been in a dry place for an extended time and you aren’t sure why.  You feel like it has been forever and you keep wondering when you are going to transition to a place of abundance.  Well I am here to tell you to start giving thanks NOW for where you are.  Start giving thanks for how far you have already come.  Lastly, start giving him thanks for providing for you while in this dry season. As the advertisement says on TV, THIS IS ONLY A TEST.  Yes you are being tested.  Although your ‘milk and honey’ are already prepared for you, there is a season of the basics (hopefully not for 40 years) that you have to go through in order for God to see if He can trust you to keep his commands and obey him NO MATTER WHAT.

  • Can you be thankful for your beans and franks when you hear people talking about filet Mignon?
  • Can you be thankful and trust God for your WIC and food stamps while others eat out every weekend or better yet every day?  
  • Can you be thankful for your current wardrobe, knowing that someone is wishing they had what you currently have?  
  • Can you be thankful for being faithful over few so that God can one day place you over many?  
  • Can you be trusted to bless God in the small places?  
  • Can you be trusted to know that man does not live by bread, steak, salmon, steak hoagies, or any other food alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God?
“2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.” (Deuteronomy 8:2-4)
The other passage that the Lord took me to was Philippians 4:11-13 where Paul states that he had learned to be content in whatever circumstances he encountered.Can you say the same?  I mean can you REALLY?For those of you that God has REALLY blessed.  I mean spiritually and financially.  Can you be trusted to give thanks in everything if it is all taken away?  

THINK ABOUT IT….  Have you learned to be content in every area of your life?  Have you learned to be grateful and appreciative even when you are piping mad that God has decided to use you as the poster child for his Kingdom purpose?

I will tell you I’ve been there and yes I have been mad about it.  But with time I get over myself because knowing God like I know him, when certain things happen, I know HE is always up to something, even if I don’t like it.  So once I feel my flesh/ego rise up, I begin to say, ‘Lord I don’t know what you are doing, and I most certainly don’t like it, but as long you get the glory, I will go along for the ride.”  You see sometimes giving thanks isn’t always about doing it when you WANT to do it.  Sometimes it’s about doing it when you NEED to do it because it’s what NEEDS to be done in order for GOD’s purpose to be fulfilled in your life.

“11for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13)
Journal Assignment: 
So with that said, take some time to think, ponder and meditate on those passages of scripture.  Remember that in order to build your faith, you must know the word.  But not only do you need to know it, you need to know how to put it to use at the appropriate time.  Once you have meditated on those passages, write about how things would be different for you if you didn’t have food, clothing or shelter.  If you have already been there, go back to that place and really think about what was going at that time, how were you feeling, did you know God was strategically positioning you for something at a later date.  Think about how you would feel if you came home and your house was destroyed or better yet, not there?  Think about how you may overindulge on food, clothing and maybe even shelter.  You buy more than you use.  You aren’t being a good steward of what you have been blessed with. Now keep in mind we are only focusing on the basics.  Are you buying food and wasting it by not eating it before it spoils.  Are you not taking care of your home?  Are you getting slack in your home maintenance?  Are you hoarding clothes just for the sake of it.  Get rid of EVERYTHING that you are no longer using or have too much of and give it to someone who could actually put it to use.  If you are in a position to be a blessing, then DO IT.
Lord on this 5th day of thanks we just want to say thank you for the basics.  Thank for you supplying and providing us with food to eat, clothes to wear and shelter to keep us safe and warm.  Lord forgive us for taking these great but small things for granted.  We wake up every morning with no thought that at some point they could be gone in the blink of an eye.  We thank you for supplying our need according to your riches in glory.  Thank you for blessing us with more than enough.  Thank you that during our dry season, you ‘kept’ us. You provided and not only did you provide, you allowed our clothes and shoes not to be worn out just like you did for the children of Israel.  We may not have realized it then but we realize now that our setback was a set up for our comeback and for you to show out.  Lord bless the families that were affected by Hurricanes Sandy who no longer even have the basics anymore.  Bless those families and individuals who are homeless, who have no food or who only have the clothes on their bodies.  We speak a supernatural blessing to them TODAY.  Because we know that nothing is too hard for you, we pray not only for ourselves but for them that you would open a door for a job, for transportation, for groceries, for a check in the mail, anything else that they may need and lastly for insight, wisdom and understanding to recognize the blessing, utilize it properly and then immediately GIVE THANKS. We know you can do anything but fail. Now unto you who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that can ask or think.  Amen.
