I was at a forum today that was held to address an article that the community felt our local news paper shouldn’t have written. Well let me say some weren’t upset about the article because they just felt that the timing was wrong and others felt that some of the material should not have been included in the article. So once everyone had been given a chance to comment or ask questions, mind you there were 200 comment cards, (they didn’t read them all– Pastor Pridgen promised to include all comments in the blog that would be sent to the newspaper and its editor so that everyone’s voices could be heard), one of the newspaper’s black editors gets up and talks a little bit about how although there is much for the newspaper to do to repair what has been done, there is also much work for the community to do.
He goes on to say that in his 20+ years of working for the newspaper, he can count on his hands the number of times there were people of color at select meetings where decisions that could positively affect our community were being made. WE weren’t there. WE complained about not having the resources or the funding, but WE weren’t there.
As I thought about his comments I thought about the many people who complain or are just unhappy in their current state but do NOTHING about it but complain. As the saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it. There is another saying that says, as I paraphrase, he who expects nothing will get what he expects – NOTHING! Many times we expect the situation, or the person to make changes when in fact there are in evident changes that WE as individuals have to make. I have experienced many cases where the change was presented and the person said the same. Change first takes place in your mind before it can ever be implemented. What changes have you been talking, complaining or even sulking about? What are YOU doing about the issue or situation that needs to change. As I stated you have to be in it to win it. Don’t talk about something that you, yourself, are not willing to get INTO it and get your hands a little dirty. If you are aren’t doing anything, then you can’t expect any results or outcomes.
Remember that nothing beats a failure bit a try. If you don’t try, you’ll never know the outcome. Stop talking, complaining and sulking about your current situation if you aren’t ready to take the first step to make some REAL changes in your life, your family, your marriage, your career, or your community.
