What you put in you get out…

So first before I get started, I wanted to say HIIIIII!!

I know it has been a minute since I have posted anything but things have been a bit hectic on the home front so I felt I needed to take a break for a minute.  I needed to refocus and take some time to get some clarity on a few things.  In doing so, I have been increasing my reading and most of my books have focused on prayer but the most recent books I have decided to read are relative to priorities, time management and balance.  The first is John Maxwell’s “Today Matters” and the other is Joyce Meyer’s “100 ways to Simplify Your Life.”

I was feeling a little overwhelmed with everything going on and I needed to take some time to make some internal deposits to get back on track which leads me to this post.  I began to notice that as I was reading, I had been depleted.  I realized I was trying to give what I didn’t have.   I have been continuously pouring out and sowing into others but I wasn’t really taking the needed time to replenish myself.  As I was reading John Maxwell’s book today, I realized that I needed to be reading more, praying more and taking more time to replenish and refuel myself so that I could continue to give and share more.  As a speaker and a life coach, my life is about sharing and pouring into others and I have to continuously read and study resources that keep me sharp and on point.  But as with a bank account, if you continuously withdraw, at some point there isn’t anything left to take out and use if you aren’t replenishing the bank account.  As I was reading I realized that I really need to take more time for spiritual, personal and internal development.  I need to make sure I am intentional about taking care of ME or else I can’t help you take care of YOU.

I know I know I know … you are probably saying that this is something I should have paid attention to but to be honest I have been on auto pilot for some time that once I realized it I had to pull away and recharge.  However in the midst of recharging I still missed one aspect, pouring back into my gift and purpose.  Many times as people who sow into others, we work to take care of everything but the thing we are placed on this earth to do.  We get to a point where we somewhat take for granted that we don’t have to sharpen the saw as often as we should.  So on this day as I read TODAY MATTERS.  I am committed to not only making the most of my day, I am also making the most of being intentional with sowing into and refueling myself.  I intentionally take time to read those things that would help me be the best I can be so I can give my clients the best of me.  I intentionally take time to go off to quiet places to pray and seek God’s face regarding where He would desire me to be and what He would desire me to do.  I intentionally remove myself from those people, places and things that would keep me overwhelmed, distracted and unfocused.

REMEMBER… what you put in you get out.

What about you?  Now keep in mind that the focus is on making positive affirming deposits not negative pessimistic deposits because if you deposit that which is negative that is what will come out.

My Challenge you to:

If you can relate and you know you need to spend more time filling your depleted cup, I encourage you to take inventory of what you need in order to make that happen.  Don’t ask for permission, just take the time needed to recharge.  If this makes it easier, schedule it into your appointment book or calendar.  Schedule an appointment with yourself.  Do you need to exercise?  Are there books, videos, seminars, etc. that you need to read, view or attend to get your MOJO back?  Well start with just one thing that you can start doing TODAY and then DO IT.  Don’t wait for things to be perfect because there will never be a perfect time.  Don’t wait for everything to fill in line because once one thing gets in place another may fall out of place. Be kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack for not making this a priority sooner but GET MOVING.  Start replenishing that which you give out on daily basis. If you don’t, no one else will do it for you!  I’ve shared that I am reading a few books to replenish myself, praying more and taking more time to be in a quiet place.

Share your comments below at least one thing you will do to replenish yourself.  It doesn’t have to start out as something HUGE, so long as you start.  Keep it small so you can get right to it.

Remembering the Dreamer and the DREAM

Although I will be headed back home in a few hours from a fantastic vacay with my family, I just wanted to take a few moments to encourage you to remember not only the DREAM of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr but the MAN behind the dream.  He was just an ordinary person like you or me with an EXTRAORDINARY dream to make life better for EVERYONE.  He believed that we could be great by serving, great by walking in purpose, great by just taking the first step with seeing the stair case, great by doing what is right when no one is looking, and great by living and walking in love.  When we think of Dr. King’s dream, there were many who never thought it would come to past.  Now although there are some facets of his dreams that still have yet to come to past, there are parts of the dream that have.

My question for you is what dream do you have that may seem insurmountable.  What dream do you have that others may think sounds impossible?  What dream or burden has God placed upon your heart that just won’t go away.  I imagine that as our President, Barack Obama, is being sworn in today as the President of the United States, he never quite imagined his dream of influencing and changing the world would impact the world as it has done.  I would dare say that there is something deep down on the inside of you that God has deposited within you that you just can’t shake.  There are issues that don’t sit well with you, people who you believe deserve more, places in our country and world that need a servant leader like you to take the bull by the horns and break the mold and challenge the status quo.  It is time for you to dream a dream like Dr. King and President Obama that is so BIG that it lives on long after you have left this earth.  It is time for your dreams to be lived out and become a reality. It is time for you to step up and step out.  It is your time to be great by serving…

As we celebrate Dr. King and President Obama on this great day, I will leave you with this great words from Dr. King’s speech, “The Drum Major Instinct”

But that isn’t what Jesus did; he did something altogether different. He said in substance, “Oh, I see, you want to be first. You want to be great. You want to be important. You want to be significant. Well, you ought to be. If you’re going to be my disciple, you must be.” But he reordered priorities. And he said, “Yes, don’t give up this instinct. It’s a good instinct if you use it right. (Yes) It’s a good instinct if you don’t distort it and pervert it. Don’t give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be first in love. (Amen) I want you to be first in moral excellence. I want you to be first in generosity. That is what I want you to do.”

And he transformed the situation by giving a new definition of greatness. And you know how he said it? He said, “Now brethren, I can’t give you greatness. And really, I can’t make you first.” This is what Jesus said to James and John. “You must earn it. True greatness comes not by favoritism, but by fitness. And the right hand and the left are not mine to give, they belong to those who are prepared.” (Amen)

And so Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. (Amen) That’s a new definition of greatness.

And this morning, the thing that I like about it: by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, (Everybody) because everybody can serve. (Amen) You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. (All right) You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. (Amen) You only need a heart full of grace, (Yes, sir, Amen) a soul generated by love. (Yes) And you can be that servant.

Excuses

Are you ready for purpose, destiny and the marvelous future awaiting you?

If not, it’s time to start getting ready.

Stop saying you are waiting for the right time to start.  While you keeping saying you are waiting for it, it is waiting for you?  By saying that you are waiting for the right time, or the right day or the right month, you are just providing more EXCUSES to keep doing what you’ve always done, which is NOTHING.  I know it makes you feel better to say ‘I’m waiting on the right time‘ than to admit that fear is what causes you to procrastinate thus causing you to do NOTHING.

Well today, DO SOMETHING, do one thing you know you should be doing.  A little bit of progress is better than no progress at all.  One step is better than none.  Sometimes the way is made open and available to those who take the first step without seeing where it may lead.

I encourage you to stop fearing failure.  Feel the fear and do what you need to do in spite of the fear.  Many times, what we fail to realize is that it is in failure that we find success.  As you make mistakes, you learn what works and what doesn’t.  So stop making excuses and starting making things happen.

The first step you may need to do is schedule your get acquainted session with me to see if a coach is what you need to get you motivated and moving.

Until next time…

Believe BIG

Napoleon Hill said “What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” In prayer this morning God revealed to me that many of us don’t have a problem conceiving. We can think big dreams, we can see the ‘possibility’ of having more. The problem is in the believing. We see it but we don’t believe it for ourselves. It’s ok for someone to be blessed but not us. What the mind can conceive AND believe, it can achieve. The blessings of God are not just for everyone else. YOU are included in that number! Seeing isn’t always believing. Sometimes you see it but you don’t believe it which why is you don’t have it. STOP IT! I don’t know who this is for. But you can have what you see! Start believing it!

Now there are others who are even afraid to think big because you don’t believe it can happen. You are afraid of failing. You think are aren’t worthy. Well guess what? Get moving… Fail forward and TRUST and BELIEVE you are worthy and worth it!  So start conceiving today… start thinking beyond your wildest dreams for healing, for bigger faith, for living in ultimate purpose… for being a lender instead of a borrower. GO ahead… now once you start thinking it…. add God’s word to it so you can start believing… ‘as a man thinks in his heart so is he.’  Once you get past conceiving, and master believing, you WILL ACHIEVE!!

Until next time…

Spit It Out

Lately, God has been speaking to me in the most odd ways. Well I guess if you think about it, He speaks to us all the time, it’s just a matter of if we are willing to ‘see’ or hear what He is trying to tell us. The other day I was feeding my son who is now 13 months (WOW how times flies) and I put something in his mouth that he didn’t like and he IMMEDIATELY spit it out. There was no thought about it whatsoever. The interesting thing is that he has always done this. If what I give him to eat is something he’s not excited about, he spits it out. The other thing he does is if he has something in his mouth (that he actually may like) and I give him something new or something better, he spits out what is currently in his mouth. My husband and I get such a kick out of it. How awesome, but interesting, is it that a person who has only been on this earth 13 months knows what he likes and doesn’t like and without question? How is it that when he sees something he wants he spits out what he doesn’t want with no thought at all about what might happen if what he wants doesn’t taste as good as what he had? As I watched him one day, God began to speak to me and I began to think about why we can’t be as simple but aggressive in our adult lives. Why do we go through life eating and accepting things that we know we don’t like and we know don’t work for us, BUT yet we still keep doing it. It is somewhat INSANE… doing that SAME thing over again and expecting DIFFERENT results.

My answer to you is …

SPIT IT OUT

Try something different. Stop thinking the same way you’ve always thought. Stop saying the same things you’ve always said. Lastly, stop DOING the same things you’ve always done. At some point you have to do what my son does and SPIT IT OUT if you don’t like it. SPIT OUT those thoughts that aren’t helping you get to that place of purpose you desire. SPIT OUT those negative words you tell and believe about yourself. Negativity begets negativity. SPIT OUT those negative actions and behaviors that result in negative results and consequences. Just like my son immediately knows that he likes and doesn’t like. You know what you should be allowing into your life. Now if you don’t, that is where I come in as our coach to help you identify those thoughts, words, actions and behaviors that are keeping you from living your best life. Being authentic to who you are and who you were created to be has to start being a priority for you. If you don’t put you first, WHO will? Some times you have to SPIT OUT those people, places and things that keep you from living the life of purpose you were created to live.

My Challenge to you:

Take some time to assess your thoughts, words, actions and behaviors. Are they leading you toward living life IN and ON purpose. If not, then you need to SPIT THEM OUT NOW and start taking in those things that will push you toward that goal. Furthermore, you may also need to SPIT OUT some people (you hang with), places (you currently go), and things (you do or don’t do) in order for you to get on the path of purpose.

Once you’ve had some time to think about it, share your answers in the comment below. TELL ME…What (or who) do you need to spit out and when are you going to do it?

Get up after falling…

This is an exciting time for my family!  My son is starting to learn how to walk and as I watch him take one step, then two steps, then stumble and fall and then get back up,  I am reminded that this is how life is for just about all of us when we feel ourselves moving to the next level, if we are willing to admit it.  In pursuit of purpose, we start on one level and then as we feel the pull to transition to the next level, we take one step forward, fall, then take another step and stumble, take two steps and then fall again.  At some point, we get tired and resort to what’s SAFE …crawling again (going back to what’s comfortable or easy for us).

That is exactly what my son is doing.  He takes a few steps, falls down, gets back up out of excitement and falls immediately back down due to his inability to maintain his balance (I will deal with the issue of balance on another day).  After falling a few times, he gives up on trying to walk and then goes back to crawling again.  I know some of you reading this know exactly what I am talking about because you have children and have seen this happen with them.  However there are those of you who know exactly what I am talking about because you are the one who is being pulled to a new level and/or in a new direction and you aren’t quite sure how to get there.  But as you take those small steps you find it getting easier to move toward that place that you know purpose resides.  Now some of you, who immediately after falling, resort back to what’s easy and comfortable, daring to never take another step out of fear of falling again.   It is easier for you to rest in what you already know rather than the unknown of what is up ahead waiting for you.  Let me say this to you… PLEASE DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED and PLEASE DO NOT STOP WHERE YOU ARE!

Just as my son may take one step here then five steps there, falls in between, then gets back up when he thinks he is ready to take a few more steps, you too should not worry about falling but about getting back up and getting yourself moving forward toward your life of purpose and significance.  What you are not realizing is that falling gives you small doses of confidence, so that when you take that next step, you have the assurance of knowing that if you took the previous one, you can take another.  It may seem scary and it may seem impossible, but trust that as you take more steps, like my son, you will get the hang of ‘walking.’

To help you find comfort in falling, here are a few things that I learned while watching my son:

  1. When you fall don’t get upset, it’s part of the process.  In fact instead of getting discouraged, give yourself credit for taking that first step.  He gets so excited when he realizes he has taken a few steps on his own.  That excitement propels him to want to take more steps.
  2. Surround yourself with people who will be just as excited about your small accomplishments as your large ones.  It is extremely important to have supportive people around you when in the infancy stages of life transitions.  One of the reasons, my son loses his balance is because we get so excited that he has taken steps that our screams and claps get him all worked up as well.   Sometimes not even knowing how big of deal his one, two or five steps were, he looks back at us wondering what all of the excitement is about.
  3. Even if you only take one step, know that it is getting you one step closer to that place you desire to be.  REMEMBER… it all starts with that first step.  You can’t get ahead if you don’t get started.
  4. Take on the innocence and naiveté of an infant.  My son takes his steps not based on the fear of falling but with the confidence that he can do it. Take the risk anyway.  You will never know unless you try.  Sometimes you have stop thinking so much and like Nike says, ‘Just Do It.’  Thinking too much will cause you to develop what is called ‘analysis paralysis,’ where you think about something so much that you think yourself out taking any action.
  5. Get back up.  Don’t stay down there for long.  Although that is where you may feel most comfortable, know that ‘crawling’ is not your ultimate destination.  You were meant to not only walk but to run.  So keep moving.

Don’t let fear of falling keep you from the pursuit of living life in and on purpose. Get out there, get up after each fall and take at least one step today!  Don’t wait until tomorrow start NOW!

Here’s to YOU living life in and on purpose… Remember to thine own self be TRUE, for out of the abundance of the HEART, the mouth SPEAKS!

Until next time…
